Suffixes & Prefixes
Prefixes and suffixes have their own meanings and are added to base words. They change the meanings of base words. You can use suffixes and prefixes to help you figure out the meanings of words.
Prefixes
A prefixe is a syllable added to the beginning of a base word to change its meaning or the way it is used in a sentence.
The prefix un- means “the opposite of ” or “not,” as in unfair.
The prefix re- means “to do over” or “again,” as in rebuild.

The suffix -ist can make a word mean “one who is an expert in” such as biologist.
The suffix -ive means “tending or inclined to ____" such as supportive.
The suffix -able means “able to be ed,” as in foldable.
The suffix -less means “without,” as in fearless.
The suffix -ous can make a noun mean “full of ________,” as in delicious.
The suffix -ment means “the action, process, or result of ________,” as in enjoyment.
In dictionaries, the definition of a base word with the suffix added is usually found near that of the base word. The base word’s definition is helpful in understanding a word’s meaning
