Contractions
A contraction is a shortened form of two words. An apostrophe takes the place of one or more letters. The first word usually remains the same while some letters are taken out of the second word.
Some contractions are formed from a pronoun and a verb:
she is = she's she is the pronoun and is is the verb.
they are = they're they is the pronoun and are in the verb
Other contractions combine a verb and the word not. These are negative contractions. The word not is shortened to n't.
would not = wouldn't would is the verb
does not = doesn't does is the verb
